“ Everything can be taken from a man or a woman but one thing:
the last of human freedoms to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances,
to choose one’s own way.”
~ Victor Frankle
Several people I know have lately expressed that life was not fair because they had been really good and bad things happened to them anyway. What I shared with them is – if you’re being good so bad things don’t happen – quit. It doesn’t work.
Life doesn’t work that way. Things happen. The good or bad is our judgment about them and so as we learn to give up judgment we learn to be at peace with whatever happens. That’s where peace comes from – inside, not outside, not from what happens or doesn’t happen. When we are at peace on the inside the outside can’t affect us the same way.
The inside is where we stop judging. Where we accept that things happen and we stop torturing ourselves with whether they should have happened or not and how terrible or unfair they are.
If you don’t believe me, listen to this 108 year old woman‘s story. Tell me, is she a good woman? Is what happened to her fair? If you believe being good insures bad things don’t happen…. well then explain her life to me.
